ALEX HUGHES

Alex Hughes was born in Birmingham, and has lived there all his life. He started out cartooning whilst at the University of Warwick.

He began drawing for the student paper, The Warwick Boar. Upon leaving Warwick he eventually stumbled into a Masters course in Cartooning at UCE (they don't run it any more, don't ask), and when he left there he turned freelance.

He now draws regularly for The Tribune, Environment Business Magazine and Managing Schools Today. He also appears on 'The Midlands at Westminster' on BBC2 in the Midlands, and has drawn for Red Pepper, Big Issue, Daily Telegraph, Birmingham Sports Argus, Construction News, and Jewish Socialist. Exhibitions include The Cartoonist's Progress. He produced a series of advertisements for New Internationalist. He also appeared in a feature for 'Premiere' for Central TV in January.

His book 'Learn to Draw Caricatures' was published by HarperCollins in January 1999 (£7.99 available from all good bookshops), and he also appeared in 'Learn to Draw Cartoons that Sell' by John Byrne (also HarperCollins), as well as producing the artwork for the recent album by [spunge], Pedigree Chump.

In addition to all this he also draws on-the-spot caricatures (rates on application) and he is currently working on a strip called 'Anoraknaphobia'.
